Mother Arrested Under Truancy Prevention Program

http://www.northcountrygazette.org/news/2008/03/13/truancy_arrest/

This is sort of an interesting one. A 16 year old girl skips school around 100 times, so they mother get arrested. BUT, New York only makes you go to school until you're 16. So, the mother of a girl who doesn't legally need to be going to school gets arrested for that kid not going to school.

I like the truancy program, since I do think parents need to be responsible for having their kids in school. However, I don't every remember skipping school before school. Whenever I skipped school (wasn't often), I was at school, then left. How are the parents to hold the schools responsible? The article even says:

Her mother said that she had taken her to school on numerous occasions only to have the girl leave.

If that's the case, the skipping of school happened once the kid is already there, it's no longer the responsibility of the parent, as the kid is in the control of the school.
