I was driving back from bringing Kyla and Suzy to the airport this afternoon. We've all been there, on the highway behind a pickup truck with a ladder (or something) laying on a metal frame. It's probably been through all our minds... "I hope that stays on there".
So, there I am, driving behind such a pickup in the center lane.. about 8-10 car lengths behind, traveling at about 75. I'm singing along to Turn the Page and look up. The ladder was suddenly in, well, this / sort of position. I think "That doesn't look right", and it sure didn't. In almost slow-motion I watch it start turning, and fly right off. It starts rolling right in front of, in my lane. I put on my brakes, blinker, look in my side-view and move over to the right lane. Luckily, I missed it, and it didn't roll into me.
Lessons here: Make sure your ladders are secure, and allow follow from a safe distance.
