How to NOT build a business

I really can't stand calling a business for something, leaving a message, and not getting a call back. Especially, when it's someone who has done work for you, or because you are calling because they need to come fix something.

On Monday, I called the landscapers I have used to install my sprinklers saying I had a broken head. I asked if there was a way to turn one head off so I can still run that zone, and if they would come replace the head. As of now, no return call. I happened to have just had my back yard re-graded, so need hydroseeding. Since they are unresponsive, I called another company for a quote. While giving me the quote, the guy also replaced my sprinkler head and adjusted a few others. Chances that I'll ever use the first company again, zero. Nice guys, but if you can't take 2 minutes to call me back, you don't deserve my money.

And, there is also the hardwood floor guy. In the Fall I noticed some gaps in some planks. He came out and said to wait until mid summer to see if they go back together with the rise in humidity, then call him back if they don't. No problem, I waited. Many gaps didn't close up, so they need to be fixed. Again, been calling since Monday and NO RESPONSE. I really have no problem having someone else fix them, then take them to small claims to be reimbursed. I just want them to fix what they said they would, and to call me back. I'd be satisfied with a "We got your call, we're very busy, can we call you back next week?" Fine, that's all I ask. I'm tempted to call, leave a different name and my cell # saying I want a quote for some Brazilian Cherry floors, and see how quick they call me back.

If you own your own business, and you have someone who is an existing customer, call them back within 2 business days. No matter what your business, you have competition and if they provide better customer service, they will take your customers.

Well.. back to leave ANOTHER message for the floor guy.

UPDATE: Someone actually answered at the flooring people. They said the owners are on vacation. Here's a tip, if you're not planning to call people back, leave that sort of message on your answering machine.
