School Security

Security in our schools seems to be more and more important these days. It's one thing to worry about kids who want to kill, but when you have adults who aren't parents of students coming in it's a different type of ballgame.

I have wondered about the security in the schools where I live. You can pretty much walk right in and wander about. That's not safe. After the killing last week in CO I emailed the President of the School Board asking about security. Today, the Superintendent of Schools called me to assure me that security is high priority and things are being discussed to make sure our kids are safe. First, I must say, I'm surprised the Superintendent called me. That, to me, says a lot.

I had suggested looking for volunteers, for the time being, to watch the front doors of the schools. Checking IDs and giving the visitor passes. I know if a bad guy was coming in, and I was there, I'd take a bullet if the sound gave someone else the time to call the police and tell teachers to lock their doors. I also suggested seeing if there are off-duty cops who may want to volunteer. There is a State Police station right across the street, so maybe finding a few cops to spare a few hours a week wouldn't be out of the question.

If you don't feel your kids school is safe, call about it. Go to a School Board meeting and ask what's being done. Be pro-active. Crazy people killing kids isn't limited to the big city, and is just as likely to happen in your town.
