Suzy and Kyla are in Mexico with her family for the week. So, last night I decided to give a try calling them. I ring the resort/hotel/whatever it is expecting to hear "For English, press 2" or something. But, no. Just Spanish.. fast Spanish. Not "2 years in high school 15 years ago" pace.
A man answers the line, I have no idea what he says. I say "English?" he says "no". I say "four zero nine" hoping he guesses it's an extension. He rambles some Spanish, and I repeat "four zero nine", then I'm on hold. The hold music sounds like the music on a merry-go-round. After 20 seconds he comes back, and says something.. he may have been calling my mother a goat.. and I just say "Not there?" and he says "no". Gracias.. and I hang up.
In the US you pretty much can't call anywhere without hearing an option for Spanish. ATMs all have the option. Everything has the option to hear Spanish. I'd doubt this is done for the benefit of people in Puerto Rico or Spain. It's likely done for the benefit of Mexicans (and the 12 million ones here illegally). So, why doesn't a resort down in Mexico return this favor and have an option for English? I'm sure we are what supports that economy (Cancun area).
I called again this morning (they still weren't in) but at least the lady spoke English. I used my Spanglish.. "Buenos dias.. habla English?" Next time, if they don't, I'll just say "extension cuatro cero nueve" and hope that works.
