CNN.com - Walkout gets under way across U.S. - May 1, 2006
Ok.. so the title is a little offensive on this post :-)
I think this whole march and boycott thing is pretty stupid. What are they protesting? The possible enforcement of laws to keep people who are in this country, and working in this country, illegaly out. I mean, really, "illegal" is even in the term used for these folks. I'm not exactly sure why they can't just go about things the way they should, and the way millions of people do. Plus, it's extrememly odd that they are protesting in a country they are not allowed to be in, instead of going back to their own country and protesting the conditions which made them leave in the first place. Doesn't it seem more logical to try to change the reasons why they left, instead of protesting their known illegal status?
I think that this will show that there is no minority group which can do a work stoppage and bring the country to a halt. Maye teenagers, but certainly not any ethnic minority. I think tomorrow, when it's over, most people will go "huh? Who stopped doing what to protest what?" because it won't be a blip on their screens.
I also wonder why it seems like so many have forgotten 9/11. The whole point of enforcing our immigration laws is to make sure people who aren't supposed to be here, aren't. Terrorists can come into this country the same ways these others do. We can't have that. Terrorists can be in this country by other means and stay here because we don't enforce these laws (some of the 9/11 hijackers were here by overstaying visas). Enforcing laws isn't something against anyone, it's a protective measure. Forget the econimic factors like not paying taxes, or not having medical insurance... it's about being safe.
We'll see what happens.
