Movie: I, Robot

Watched this last night. It was.. hmmm.. unoriginal may be the word I'm looking for. Parts of Ghost In The Shell, 2001, The Matrix and about every other movie which deals with "what is alive" when it comes to robots.

In itself, the movie wasn't that bad. But, if you took out all the non original parts, it would be a 20 minute show. So, not overly impressed although it was fun to watch. Entertaining, but typical uninspired Hollywood flash.

Right, but the movie is obviously taking cues from the other movies. For example, there is a scene which, if squinting to make it darker, would look like Zion being attacked in Matrix Revolutions. Some of the action positions of the robots are very GITS like. And, I did expect Vicki to say "Just what do you think you're doing Spooner?" in an angry HAL like voice. The movie itself wasn't very original, even if the book was 30+ years ago.

The movie doesn't really do well with the source (the book). GITS would probably be more enjoyed by Asimov since it tackled the things which I, Robot didn't delve deep enough into.. Posthumanism. It was more of "People are now lazy" and "Robots are a race of things which I don't trust or like" themes. More action movie than what should have been about what it means to exist.

The story of GITS and Matrix, and others, may have gotten the "what does it mean to exist" from the book, but this movie certainly copied these other films. At least it didn't copy Metropolis!

Oh, not to mention seeing WAY too much of Wil Smith! As in, the shower.
