Private School?

When the in-laws were here, Kylas education of course came up. When we were in FL, Kyla went to a Montessori school for pre-K. We believe it helped quite a bit in various aspects, and of course her ability to read at a 3rd grade level by time she got to K and her understanding of concepts beyond her age. While in K they had her go to a reading teacher a few times a week so she could read, while all her classmates were learning letters. She would also read to the class, which was cool because the teacher said that helped the other kids want to learn to read even more. Great! But, we get a little nervous that if she can't be learning at her own pace the majority of the time she will fall behind, or get bored. I know I was bored as hell in school until I was able to take AP courses.

We were nervous about this for K, but figured she'd be ok.. and she was. Although if she was in private school she could have been farther in math than she is now (she can do some basic addition/subtraction now). So anyways, this conversation came up. The in-laws offered up that they would pay for Kyla to be in private school because they would rather spend money on that, than on things like toys. Very nice offer. One problem is that there aren't too many non-religious private schools around in the boonies. Montessori is a hike from here, but there is a private school in town which looks interesting if there is space left. I'll probably call them, and at least go in and check the place out.

For now, we will keep her in public school though. At least for part of this year. Why? Well, it's a mile away. Also she is making friends there and taking her to a different school now would mean she'd have to start over. Also, we can see if the school helps accomodate her again by giving her some "private" classes so she can do some things at her own pace.

Anyways.. some food for thought.

Hey Kev... my parents offered the same for us with Kayla. Although we have no experience with private schools, we decided to hold off until a) we move or b) Kayla reaches middle school.

So far, Kayla has excelled in some subjects (math)and stayed with her peers or perhaps just above (reading)on others. Overall, though we've been happy with her school and the teachers she has had up until now.
