Yahoo! News - U.S. Steers Consumers Away From IE
I've said for years what the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team now says... don't use IE. If you haven't listened to me, or about every security person in the last 5 years.. maybe you'll listen to the gubment.
Posted by Kevin at July 02, 2004 11:44 PMI have to admit I've been using IE ever since I started using the internet. Last week I started getting a lot of problems with sites downloading dialers and other crap onto my computer. After my computer started to automatically dial premium rate numbers (the ones you'd never want to connect to) I thought thats enough. So my good friend the IT technician at work told me that was what to expect if I use IE. So he gave me a copy of Mozilla Firefox which is absoulutly brillant. I haven't had one single pop up yet!!!

Although being a lot better than IE using firefox I still have this damn dialer on my computer. Please help I haven't a clue how this dialer got on my computer. I thought that I had gotten rid of it by deleting all that I could find. I'm using the latest Ad-Ware program, Sophos antivirus. Yet still I'm bugged by this dialer crap. This is the second time I've tried to write this as everytime I go onto the internet that damn dialer disconnects me and trys to connect to a premium number. The sneaky thing about it is that it turns of the modem sound so that I don't know its dialing. Any idea people?????
Posted by: Justin Cavnor, Isle of Wight, England on July 5, 2004 10:36 AMYour next step.. get a Mac :-) I'm surprised Ad-Aware didn't find and remove it. Without knowing which malware it is, I don't know how to help. Does it sound like the same as this guy:

Posted by: Kevin on July 5, 2004 8:46 PMThank you Kevin. I'm at work at the moment so unable to follow instruction from that link you gave me. Sort of the same problem. I think my main problem is being able to locate all the dialer files. Not being much of a tech head I'm not sure (to be honest I haven't a clue) what files do what. I've taken a file off called msmsgrau.exe plus all the other obvious ones, not sure what it does but it had a nasty little icon over it! I'll definetly go back to ad-aware and follow the instructions given to tweak it. Thank again, I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow(7th).
Posted by: Justin Cavnor, Isle of Wight, England on July 6, 2004 7:15 AMHad no luck with Ad-aware finding anything new. Although I did find some files manually. Hopefully its all gone now. How's Suzy by the way?
