Battle Royale

Batoru rowaiaru (2000)

Since I'm loving the maga, I got the Battle Royale movie and watced it tonight.

Battle Royale, a film by the veteran Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku, tells the story of a dystopic future in which each year, a randomly-selected 9th grade class is kidnapped and sent to a deserted island where they are equipped with weapons and are forced to kill each other until one survivor is left. The movie, which premiered in Japan on December 16, 2000 amidst much controversy, is based on a bestselling novel by Koushun Takami.

Imagine that. Being put on an island with 42 of your classmates and having to only have 1 survivor after 3 days time. The catch, if after 3 days more than one person is alive, the explosive necklaces which are locked on you will explode... and nobody survives.

Since the movie isn't released in the US, I have a Korean version of it. The movie is really good. Some minor differences than the manga, and likely the novel, but fun to watch. The subtitles aren't bad, but really poor in some spots. A mix of Engrish and just bad translation. I don't think it took away from the movie, and is much better than not seeing it at all.

I'll say this one is worth seeing.
